Q&A: Shannon Hale, Author of ‘Dream On’

We chat with author Shannon Hale about Dream On, which is a new middle grade graphic novel about hope, friendship, and heartfelt wishes, perfect for fans of Invisible Emmie and Click.

Hi, Shannon! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I’m an author and have published books for all ages, from board books to adults; in lots of genres like fantasy, superhero, science fiction, memoir, romcom, and realism; and in lots of styles, like novels, graphic novels, illustrated chapter books, and picture books. I live in Utah with my husband, four kids, and two cats.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I always made up stories. I would create immersive games to play with my friends and put on mini-plays for anyone who would watch. In fourth grade, my teacher introduced us to creative writing, and I was hooked. Though I never imagined that I could really become an author as a career.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

  • The first book you ever remember reading: Go Dog Go! by PD Eastman
  • The one that made you want to become an author: The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
  • The one that you can’t stop thinking about: Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko

Your latest graphic novel, Dream On, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Big feelings and bigger dreams

What can readers expect?

A funny, hopeful, realistic look at what it feels like to be a sensitive kid. Like me, Cassie grew up in 1980s Utah in a big family and feels a little lost and overwhelmed by her emotions. Her daydreams keep her going…and keep her hoping everything will be okay.

Where did the inspiration for Dream On come from?

After writing my graphic novel memoir Real Friends, I had so many stories from my childhood that I hadn’t used yet. I wanted to create a fictional character based on me and keep exploring the ups and downs of elementary school years.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

All of them! Cassie’s teacher, Mrs. Farmer, claims that she’s actually a princess. (A fifth teacher told young me this too!) Stesha is a prickly girl who tries to steal Cassie’s best friend away, and I love exploring tricky characters and understanding why they do what they do.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

Every book presents many challenges. Dream On is my 50th book! I’ve learned that revisions heal all wounds. I just keep working, keep rewriting, till I figure it out. I never get a story right in one draft. Dream On probably took 30+ revisions.

Dream On is illustrated by Marcela Cespesdes. What was the process like in seeing your characters and story come to life?

It’s amazing. Like Christmas morning each time I get sketches, inks, and final art. So when I’m working on an illustrated book, I’m celebrating Christmas all year long. Marcela is SO GOOD. Her art is funny and sweet and tender and wise.

What’s next for you?

Dream On gets a sequel next year—Dream Big!

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed reading this year? Are there any you’re looking forward to picking up?

So many. Lately I’ve been reading a lot of memoir, mystery, romcom, and non-fiction. I like to switch between physical books, audio books, and graphic novels. Variety is delightful to me.
