POSTPONED: Author and Cartoonist Liana Finck Comes To Open Book/Open Mind Series

POSTPONED: We were just informed that this event has been postponed. Check MPL’s website for updated information.
Montclair Public Library will be welcoming New Yorker cartoonist Liana Finck on Saturday, May 18, at 4 p.m. She will discuss her humorous new illustrated memoir, “How to Baby,” with fellow graphic memoirist Mira Jacobs (“Good Talk”). The discussion is accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation in Finck’s signature style. An audience Q&A and signing with Watchung Booksellers will follow. The program is part of Open Book / Open Mind, MPL’s popular, long-running literary conversation series.
“How to Baby” was released on April 30.
Double the Talent
Liana Finck is the author of three graphic novels and a memoir. She has published several collections of her cartoons with Penguin Random House. The New York Times and The New York Times Book Review reviewed and featured her work.
She regularly contributes to many publications including the New Yorker. She is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship.

“I struck a note between parody and memoir,” Finck told Publishers Weekly earlier this year. “It’s a parody of books on how to parent an infant—older books that told you it was going to be beautiful and easy and didn’t mention anything difficult. I found them hilarious. Parenthood isn’t something that you need to trick people into, and those books felt ripe for making fun of. I’m also parodying the books that say parenthood is a horrible, difficult slog…I want to give companionship to readers: a means to vent their own feelings, whatever those are, even if they can’t be articulated.”
Mira Jacob is a novelist, memoirist, illustrator, and cultural critic. She is the author of the graphic memoir “Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations.” The memoir is currently in development as a television series with Film 44. Her novel, “The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing” is also in development for a show. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Electric Literature, Tin House, Literary Hub, Guernica, Vogue, and the Telegraph. She is currently the visiting professor at the MFA Creative Writing program at The New School. She is also a founding faculty member of the MFA Program at Randolph College. Jacob is the co-founder of Pete’s Reading Series in Brooklyn, where she spent 13 years bringing literary fiction, non-fiction, and poetry to Williamsburg.
