Justice Sonia Sotomayor Honors Her Puerto Rican Roots in New Picture Book for Kids

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is bringing her message of self-worth, empathy, and empowerment to young readers with her upcoming picture book Just Shine! How to Be a Better You. Geared especially toward little Latinas, the book is a heartfelt tribute to recognizing the brilliance within ourselves and others.
At 71, Sotomayor continues to be a trailblazer, both in law and in literature. Her latest work tells the story of a young Puerto Rican girl who has a special gift: she can see what makes the people around her unique. Through encouragement and compassion, the young heroine helps others embrace their true selves. With each act of kindness, she uplifts her community and reminds readers that we all have the power to help others feel seen and valued.
The book draws deeply from Sotomayor’s own life, particularly the wisdom and guidance of her late mother, Celina Báez. Báez played a central role in shaping the values Sotomayor still holds dear. In a statement earlier this year, the justice reflected on her mother’s influence, saying, “I attribute my success to my mother and all she taught me about being a good person and treating others with respect and care.” She added, Just Shine! How to Be a Better You is the story of those lessons from my mother. I hope the children who read my book will enjoy learning about the simple ways we can help our friends shine and make the world a better place for us all.”
Illustrated by Jacqueline Alcántara, a Chicago-based author and artist known for vibrant books like The Field, Freedom Soup, and Tíos and Primos, the picture book pairs colorful visuals with a powerful message. Alcántara’s illustrations bring life to the story’s characters and their emotional journeys, enhancing its message of connection and kindness.
Just Shine! How to Be a Better You will be published by Philomel Books on September 9. The release adds to Sotomayor’s growing contributions to children’s literature, continuing her mission to empower young readers to believe in themselves and celebrate others.
This new book is not only a tribute to family and heritage but also a guide for children to embrace empathy, confidence, and community.
