Barnes & Noble’s nostalgic revival: New stores open nationwide

Barnes & Noble, once viewed as the Goliath to independent bookstores’ David, is now making a nostalgia-filled return.

Hundreds of book-lovers lined up outside the new Barnes & Noble in Naples on Wednesday (Jan. 29) to buy Janet Evanovich’s newest book and get it signed by the author.

You may know Evanovich as a #1 New York Times bestselling author, but did you know she has a special tie to Naples?

Though her popular “Stephanie Plum” series takes place in New Jersey, Evanovich now calls Naples one of her homes.

“I love my neighbors,” Evanovich said. “I live in The Moorings now and it’s the best. I live on the best street ever.”

While Evanovich loves the Naples community, she keeps her writing contained in her office rather than trying to write in coffee shops around town.

Her latest installment in the Stephanie Plum series, “Now or Never” is the thirty-first book in the series.

“I don’t run out of things to write about, but it’s very difficult because you have old readers and then you have the new readers,” Evanovich shared with Naples Daily News. “I have to introduce my characters in a way that’s interesting to the new reader, but not boring to the person that’s been with me for 20 years.”

Evanovich has written more than 70 books over her nearly 40-year long career. She writes lots of characters, but of course has her favorite few: Diesel with the “Wicked” series and Gabriela and Rafer from “The Recovery Agent.

So what does Evanovich do when she finishes writing a book?

“I start another one,” she said with a smile. Her assistant nodded with a laugh and backed up Evanovich’s response: “I can vouch for that.”

Evanovich doesn’t read much fiction, as she says it interferes with her own writing. But she told Naples Daily News that she loves cookbooks, especially the Preppy Kitchen ones.

You can find Evanovich’s latest book, “Now or Never: Thirty-One on the Run” at the new Barnes & Noble in Naples at 4149 Tamiami Trail N.
