BOOK REVIEW: ‘The Zombees’ buzzes with laughs and Halloween thrills | Books

What’s that creepy buzzing sound coming from the graveyard ground?

It’s the royal zombee queen! She’s leading her ghastly green swarm towards the town.

“Have they come to eat your brains?” the narrator asks a small girl, dressed in a witch’s hat and cape, who witnesses the green-skinned horde awaken as she passes a graveyard during trick or treat. Taking shelter at a local library, she determines that the swarm can be easily managed. Soon, a team of beekeepers arrives on the scene to smoke the horde into submission.

But is this group of zombees a mindless group of the undead? Or are they just having some Halloween-themed fun?

By the final page of “The Zombees,” author Justin Colon (“The Quaken”) and illustrator Kaly Quarles leave readers grinning at a clever, sweet twist.
