What’s new book review — ‘Mostly Monty’

Have you ever felt like you had no friends? I read “Mostly Monty” by Johanna Hurwitz. This story takes place at school, Monty’s home and around the neighborhood. You are introduced to Monty, the main character, who loves to read. You also meet Mrs. Meaney, Monty’s teacher, who believes that Monty is more than just a good reader. Mrs. Meaney is nothing like her last name. She is not mean.
This story is about a kid named Monty who feels like a nobody because he has no friends. Monty has asthma, which makes it hard for him to run around outside like other kids, or even have a pet. On the first day of school, he meets his teacher, Mrs. Meaney. At first, he was a little scared of her because he thought she would be mean, but he was totally wrong. She’s really nice. As the days turn into weeks, Monty learns more about himself and what he likes to do, and even starts a club. If you want to find out whether or not Monty is able to make friends and feel good about himself, read “Mostly Monty” by Johanna Hurwitz.
I would recommend this book to anyone who can connect to Monty. It is funny and realistic. Overall, I really liked this book and I think you would, too. If “Mostly Monty” by Johanna Hurwitz sounds interesting, check it out at the Newark Public Library or your local OWWL library.
What’s New Review, a fifth grade reading and writing enrichment program, is a cooperative effort between Kelley School enrichment teacher, Robyn Ross-Squirrel, and Newark Public Library’s Liaison to the Schools, Melissa Correia.
Ross works with the students on writing and editing reviews of the Newark Public Library’s new books, and Correia is responsible for providing the books to students and promoting and displaying the reviews. Student book reviews are on display in the children’s room of the Newark Public Library.
