Freida McFadden Just Shut Down Rumors ‘AI Is Writing Her Books,’ Plus a Few More
Freida McFadden would like to set the record straight.
The bestselling author sat down with Jenna Bush Hager for an “Open Book with Jenna” podcast episode, which aired on Dec. 11, to discuss her double life as a thriller author and physician.
McFadden, who writes under a pseudonym, is notoriously prolific. “The Intruder,” her latest, came out in October, and she has another, “Dear Debbie,” coming in January. Meanwhile, an adaptation of McFadden’s novel “The Housemaid” starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney is out in December.
Her output, combined with her job as a medical professional, has people questioning whether McFadden uses artificial intelligence to write her books.
“I think every author gets the ‘AI is writing her books,’ even though most of (my books) are written before AI,” McFadden chuckled.
She then brought up other rumors about her. “One that is very funny is people saying I’m three men,” she said.
Jenna chimed in saying doubters probably “can’t imagine” it’s just one woman penning so many page-turners on her own.
“It’s sort of a compliment,” McFadden continued. “Like it will take three men to do what I actually do.”
She then shared what she thinks is the “funniest” rumor she’s heard about herself.
“I saw a post somebody made where somebody said that in my author photo, my cleavage is Photoshopped. The funniest part was that in the post, he said he discussed it with his wife and they had a whole conversation about how my cleavage was photoshopped and why,” she said.
The author continued, “I kind of love this couple … this guy is like, ‘Hey honey, come over here, this is Photoshopped.’ And she’s like, ‘Let me take a look.’ So I love that for them.”
Elsewhere in the episode, McFadden touched on other aspects about her career, including why she has chosen to write under a pseudonym.
“I never for a moment considered not writing under a pen name. I just wanted to keep it separate,” McFadden explained.
“There’s something I also think I should mention, which is these books come from inside my brain. These are my personal thoughts, and it’s almost like when people are reading it, it’s like they’re reading my diary and it’s a little embarrassing. I don’t want them to know what I’m thinking, and now they all do.”
