Please stop stealing from small creators to “stick it to The Man”

Two times in the last month, I received very nice messages on Twitter from readers of my first novel, asking about future books. Normally, I would be thrilled to get such a message. Someone read my book! That’s awesome! However, right now those messages hit differently — because my books are not available anywhere for purchase.

Because Dreamspinner Press stopped paying its authors, I pulled my books. Since July of 2021, they haven’t been available for sale in any format — physical or digital. There might be a few used copies floating around, but I know for a fact (because they told me) that these new readers pirated my books.

Now, because my books aren’t currently available for purchase, I understand the impulse to read them illegally. If I’m not making any money anyway, what’s the harm?

The harm is that I’m trying to pitch my two novels and an unpublished third in the series to other publishers. If…
