We’re thrilled to feature Dr. Sevani Singaram, a qualified diagnostic radiographer and PhD graduate, who has turned her storytelling talents to fiction with her mystery novel, The Disappearance of Amy Nel.

In our exclusive Q&A, she shares the inspiration behind her book, her journey as a writer, and why cultivating a love of reading matters to her. Plus, one lucky reader will win a copy of this gripping mystery!

What inspired you to become a writer?
I enjoyed reading from a young age. There is a belief that writers enjoy reading and I am an example of this, since I am a book worm. I draw inspiration from a plethora of sources ranging from everyday conversations, movies, politics and even history. Writing fiction or poetry comes naturally to me and it is what I enjoy doing most.

Dr. Sevani Singaram.

Can you share a memorable moment from your writing journey?
In 2023, my first book, ‘Short stories and poetry by a South African’, was selected in the Young Writer’s Category by the Gauteng Department of Education. This meant that my book was approved to be in the library of secondary schools in Gauteng. It is also heartwarming to get positive feedback from readers who enjoyed my books. It makes the hard work worth it.

What is the hardest part of writing a book, and what do you love most about it?
It is sometimes an arduous task penning thoughts that are swirling in your mind in a coherent manner, but once the ideas flow on paper, it becomes easier to write. Months later I love reading the finished product and seeing my hard work on paper. It is definitely a labour of love since I love writing.

If you could give advice for aspiring writers, what would it be?
Read as much as you can. Seek advice from published authors. Write often and get family, friends, colleagues or authors to critique your writing. Learn to handle rejection. There are many famous authors whose books were rejected before they became international best-sellers.

What character in your book would you most like to meet in real life?
As cliched as it may sound, I would like to meet Amy Nel. When I did my PhD in Public Health, I delved into psychology so I would like to offer her advice that perhaps would change the choices she makes in the future and to help her deal with the consequences of her past actions.

How do you choose the books you read?
I find out what books are trending on social media. I also like supporting local authors. Mostly, I read books by my favorite authors.

Why do you believe reading is important?
Reading improves your vocabulary and spelling. Makes you an informed individual since it increases knowledge. It is relaxing to indulge in reading. It improves memory.

What are your top three favorite books?
I enjoy reading the Holy Bible the most but my top three books would be:
1. Difficult Daughters by Manju Kapur
2. Sister of my Heart by Chitra Banerjee Divakurani
3. A long walk to freedom- Nelson Mandela
