Unlike other entries on the list, American Horror Story focuses on a new narrative each season rather than self-contained episodes. Using this format, the creative team had more time to flesh out the ensemble and their conflicts, making it more hard-hitting when things inevitably go to hell (sometimes literally). 

Despite having over a hundred episodes under its belt, American Horror Story stays fresh by utilising a different narrative, setting, and ensemble each season. It also looks at a wide variety of genres, including body-horror, vampires, folk, post-apocalyptic, occult, and slasher. Certain plotlines take things further by utilising innovative structures, like how season six uses a documentary style while season eight does a crossover of the first and third seasons respectively.

Even though there are a few familiar faces, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, and Kathy Bates deserve special mention. Though these talented stars always bring their A-game, they showcase some of their finest (and most disturbing) work throughout this teeth-chattering drama.

Based on the way it explores social themes and develops twisted character arcs, it’s easy to see why American Horror Story is directly responsible for reviving the horror anthology genre in recent years.
