Guillermo del Toro has consistently elevated the horror genre for decades, so it was refreshing when the Mexican filmmaker announced he was helming a horror anthology series called Cabinet of Curiosities.

To ensure his passion project packed a visceral punch, del Toro assembled a talented team of horror writers and directors, including The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent, Cube’s Vincenzo Natali, and The Empty Man’s David Prior.

Even though each episode varies in visual style, tone, and themes, the spine-tingling drama maintains del Toro’s traditions, including a gothic aesthetic, a focus on practical effects, and spell-binding creature designs. 

Cabinet of Curiosities opens with del Toro himself cryptically introducing each tale, which is a clear nod to classic horror anthologies like The Twilight Zone or Night Gallery. (It’s also worth mentioning del Toro has admitted Night Gallery was the main inspiration for this show.)

Although every episode has something to offer, The Autopsy is worth singling out, since it blends body-horror with Lovecraftian lore in a hauntingly creative way.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities may have only lasted eight episodes, but it’s managed to leave a lasting mark on the genre.
